Mircoplastics are tiny pieces of plastic that are no more than 5mml in length. Microplastics come from plastic that has been broken down into smaller pieces or they could also be the beads in body washes or hand soaps. These are a concern because they are found in places that should not be. They start off in the soil and eventually find their way into the ground water. Everything in the natural world is connected, so once it gets into the ground water it can find its way into our rivers, lakes, and streams. Organisms that live in those habitats will consume the microplastics mistaking them for food.

There are been microplastics found in many water bodied organisms like fish, oysters, turtles, seagulls and mussels. When people consume these critters, they then can get microplastics into their system. It is unknown how microplastics will harm people.

What can you do about this issue:

  1. Bring your own bags when going grocery shopping.

  2. Be mindful of your purchases. Try to reduce how much plastic you are purchasing in everyday items.

  3. Follow the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, And Recycle.

Here in Jackson County we are part of the Upper Grand River Watershed. It’s important to watch our plastic usage, to prevent anything from entering our river. To learn more here are some resources about microplastics:
