Simple Steps to Reduce the plastic use in Your Life

Plastic has been getting a lot of attention lately, and it’s for good reason. Plastic is consuming our planet- we see it in the oceans, in our local waterways, and trash on the side of our roads. Most plastic doesn’t get recycled and that’s because a lot of items are a single use item. This means we can only use it one time and then it goes in the trash. Depending on the material, plastic can take up to 1,000 years to decompose. Many of us don’t think twice about the plastic materials we use daily. So what can we do? We can start by taking small steps on reducing our use of plastic.

1. Start buying food in bulk. The more items we buy in bulk the less plastic containers in our life.

2. Avoid using single use items, like straws. Straws suck, and this one is easy to avoid. Put a reusable straw in your car or purse, so you have one where ever you go.

3. Invest in some reusable items. Things like reusable bags, or water bottles are good things to have to avoid getting plastic bags from the grocery store and plastic water bottles.

4. Ditch the shrink wrap or plastic film. If you need to cover something consider investing in some bees wrap or using cloth.

5. Small things help. Example of this would be to get an ice cream cone instead of a bowl.

6. Recycle as much plastic as you can, but make sure your recycling it right. Before you throw a plastic container in your recycling in, check to see what number plastics they accept and do not accept.

There are a lot more ways to reduce your plastic use, but these are easy to begin with. Maybe some of these things you already do, and if that’s the case I challenge you to try different things to reduce your use even more. Overtime these things will become part of your daily routine.
